Independence Day
Early celebrations of Valentine's Day were connected to the Roman god Cupid. Today, Valentine's Day is a day for sweethearts and for fun. People send cards and give gifts to those they care about, and in the United States many children celebrate with a party at school.  
The celebration takes place around February 15th. It is also called the Spring Festival and it lasts for 15 days. A huge clean up gets underway days before the New Year, when Chinese houses are cleaned from top to bottom, to sweep away any traces of bad luck, and doors and windows are painted red. Firecrackers are set off during the festival to scare away evil spirits. 
July 4 is the day that Americans celebrate their Independence. Before the Revolutionary War, England owned the American colonies. After the war the colonies created their own government and eventually grew to become the United States of America.  

 

New Year's Eve

Thanksgiving

Hanukkah 
Many people all over the world celebrate at midnight on the eve of the new year. December 31, is New Year's Eve and January 1, is New Year's Day. 
 
The year 1621 was America's first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims celebrated a good harvest after a very hard year in the new world. Today Thanksgiving is celebrated by Americans the 4th Thursday in November. People give thanks for all the good things they have in their lives.  
Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is a festival celebrated by Jewish people. It remembers the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days in the temple. Special foods are eaten,gifts are given, and a candle on the Menorah is lit every day. 

 

St. Lucia

Kwanzaa
St. Lucia is celebrated in Sweden on December 13. They put apples and Swedish flags on their trees. This feast day honoring St. Lucia marks the return of the sun and whose name itself means "light."
Saint Patrick's Day (March 17th), is an Irish holiday honoring Saint Patrick, the missionary who people believe brought the Irish to Christianity.  In America, Saint Patrick's Day is a time to wear green and have a party. The first American celebration of Saint Patrick's Day was in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. Over 100 U.S. cities now hold Saint Patrick's Day parades, the largest held in New York City. 
Kwanzaa is an African American celebration with focus on the traditional African values of family, community responsibility, business, and self-improvement. Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26th to January 1st.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated on May 5 by Mexicans and Mexican Americans. Its name is Spanish for Fifth of May. Cinco de Mayo honors the victory of a Mexican army over a French army at the Battle of Pueblo on May 5, 1862.   
Ramadan is a special month of the year for Muslim people throughout the world. It is a time for them to think about their lives, devotion to God, and self-control. Muslims think of it as a kind of tune-up for their spiritual lives. Ramadan is celebrated the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.   

Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter Day is currently determined as the first Sunday after the full moon on or after March 21.

Sukkot 
Halloween is one of the oldest holidays in the world. It began over 2,000 years ago. It was a holiday to honor people who had died. Today, in many countries it is a day to dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating.  
Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated on December 25, every year.  

The Festival of Sukkot begins on the fifth day after Yom Kippur. The holiday commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert. Sukkot is also a harvest festival.
